The 2022 Blue Book of Dementia Support and Services is out now. The Blue Book gives a summary of support for older people and those living with dementia in Northumberland.

Originally a guide for people in West Northumberland, the book now includes services across the county, helping to support more people than ever.

You can view or download The Blue Book below. Hard copies are available at our offices in Hexham at most libraries and from Age UK Northumberland. If you would like a copy in the post please contact Healthwatch Northumberland.

Become a Dementia Friend

Come along to this free, interactive information session to learn how dementia affects a person and what you can do to make a difference. Become a Dementia Friend and join more than two million others taking action. From being more patient in a shop queue to campaigning for change, every action counts.

Anyone of any age can become a Dementia Friend.

The Big Sing

We’ll be holding our own ‘Big Sing’ at Cafe @ Burn Lane on BBC Music Day, Thursday 26 September. Music Day is the UK wide, annual celebration of the power of music to change lives, with over a thousand events across the UK and broadcasts on TV, radio and digital. The theme this year is music and wellbeing; the power of music to inspire, bring us together and make a positive impact.

The plan for The Big Sing in Northumberland is to get as many people, groups, organisations and places singing the same song at the same time: 11.00am on Thursday.

As part of this initiative, BBC Music Day will be launching an ambitious project, to help bring music to everyone living with dementia by 2020. September is also World Alzheimer’s Month, with World Alzheimer’s Day being on 21st September each year.

We invite you to join us at 10.45am, ready for The Big Sing at 11.00am. The chosen song is Hey Jude and we will provide the words and accompanying music. It would be great to have your support – everyone is welcome! Please note we will be filming this event.

Dementia Film Screening

Peter Woods of HexhamTV has made a film with a group of carers from Amble who are looking after their partners with dementia.

The film is called ‘A Space at the Table’ because the space at the table that the person living with dementia would normally fill is gradually fading away with far reaching implications for each person living with dementia and also for their partners.

The film which lasts for an hour and 16 minutes is very personal and powerful and comes with a warning that it is not suitable to be shown to those living with dementia, those under 16 or to people who may be adversely affected by seeing its contents

With the kind support of Tynedale Dementia Action Group and The Forum Cinema, Hexham, Peter’s film is now being shown during Dementia Action Week 2019, on Wednesday 22 May, to highlight the honest and truthful experience of carers of partners living with dementia in Northumberland..

In the future Peter hopes the film will be shown widely to health professionals and to a wider audience so the needs of carers in this situation can be properly understood.

Anyone wanting to use Peter’s film within their organisation can be sent a copy in return for a donation to the work of Dry Water Arts and The Curiosity Cafe in Amble.

Alzheimer’s Society monthly drop-ins

Are you worried about your memory? Come and have an informal chat with a dementia adviser at one of the new monthly drop-ins at Cafe @ Burn Lane. The drop-ins take place on the first Monday of the month, starting 3 December, between 11.00am and 1.00pm.
